The violent rhetoric coming from far-left activists in recent weeks has been hard to keep up with. One of the most glaring examples came in the form of a makeshift “guillotine” set up in front of the DC home of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Bezos, who ranks as the world’s wealthiest individual with over $116 billion in assets, has become a popular symbol for far-left activists to throw mud at. Now, activists are using centuries-old symbols of their own to express their hatred for him. Despite this, Amazon’s sales figures have remained strong throughout both the pandemic and the wave of riots, suggesting protesters haven’t ditched the delivery service that made Bezos rich in the first place.
The guillotine, used during the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution, was used to murder a whopping 17,000 people in a single year. The gruesome executions were considered entertainment for the masses and vendors would even sell lists of the people to be executed in a single day so those who came to view the show would know who was being killed. In a grotesque way, it’s the perfect symbol for far-leftists to use.
Those who are familiar with history will know this hatred ended in the deaths of tens of millions of people. What’s more, it wasn’t just the rich who suffered. The revolutions that have called for the death of the rich and the disbursement of rich individuals’ wealth don’t stop once there are no more rich people left to target. Instead, the middle class is demonized next because they have more money than anyone else.
If “woke” protestors get away with targeting Bezos — say, by forcing him to demolish Amazon and stop working with local police departments — the protests won’t end. Instead, new targets will be found, endangering more lives. The destruction of Amazon won’t automatically create more wealth for the poor. Instead, it will simply rob them of a valuable resource.
The idea that wealth should be disbursed to the masses because it’s “unfair” for someone to have more than someone else is one of the left’s oldest tricks. If these vulgar radicals are not put in their place, more Americans can expect to see guillotines on their doorsteps sooner than they realize.
